Devin Weingarth, a 24-year-old resident of West Palm Beach, Florida, tragically lost his life on May 22, 2015. Devin was shot to death in a drive-by shooting outside Shout, a karaoke club located on Olive Avenue just north of Clematis Street. The incident occurred around midnight and also left another man wounded. Devin, who had been working as a bouncer at the club, was known for his dedication to his family, including his longtime girlfriend, Indacia West, and their 2-year-old daughter,
Harmony. The couple was also expecting their second child in December of that year.
The investigation into Devin's death led to the arrest of Jovany Ortiz, who was charged with first-degree murder. Ortiz, who was 26 at the time, was apprehended by U.S. Marshals outside the state later on the day of the shooting. According to the police, Devin and Ortiz were acquainted, although the exact nature of their relationship and the motive behind the shooting were not immediately clear. Devin's family expressed their confusion and sorrow, stating that they did not know Ortiz and were unaware of any conflicts involving Devin.
Ortiz faced multiple court appearances following his arrest. During these proceedings, Ortiz's mother defended her son, claiming he was not a bad person and suggesting he might have been bullied. Despite her pleas, Ortiz was held without bail and eventually sentenced to 40 years in prison on a second-degree murder charge. The case highlighted the devastating impact of Devin's death on his family, who continue to grapple with their loss and the challenges of explaining the tragedy to Devin's young children.
Devin's life was marked by his hard work and commitment to providing for his family. He had held various jobs, from short-order cook to roofer, and had recently taken on the role of a bouncer. Despite facing legal troubles in the past, including arrests for drug violations and traffic infractions, Devin was deeply devoted to his family. His mother, Karen Weingarth, described him as someone who always wanted to give his children a better life than he had. The community mourned his loss, and his funeral was held on June 6, 2015, at Tillman Funeral Home in Palm Springs.
