On December 5, 1995, Tariq Hussain, a 25-year-old Pakistani male, was tragically killed during a botched robbery at his family's convenience store, the Five Star Food Store, in Lakewood Park, Florida. The incident occurred when Lanadieal Ashe, then 17 years old, along with her accomplices Ricardo Henchell, 22, and Tyrone Cox, 13, attempted to rob the store. During the robbery, Tariq Hussain, who kept a gun for protection, shot Ashe in the shoulder. In response, Ashe reflexively fired back, fatally wounding Hussain. He was found dead behind the store counter, having been shot in the neck, with the bullet stopping behind his heart.
The aftermath of the incident saw swift arrests. Lanadieal Ashe was apprehended within hours and later confessed to causing Hussain's death, although she claimed it was an accident and in self-defense. Ricardo Henchell and Tyrone Cox were also arrested. Henchell received a life sentence, while Cox, who was released from prison in 2012, remains under supervision until 2022.
The case underwent significant legal scrutiny over the years. Ashe was initially sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. However, following two U.S. Supreme Court rulings that deemed mandatory life sentences for juveniles unconstitutional, Ashe's case was revisited. In 2018, after serving over 22 years in prison, Ashe was resentenced to 40 years, with eligibility for another review in about three years. This resentencing was part of broader changes in juvenile sentencing laws, which allowed for the possibility of reduced sentences for those convicted as minors.
Throughout the legal proceedings, the focus often shifted between Ashe's traumatic background and the impact of her actions on the Hussain family. Tariq Hussain's brother, Aslam "Ozzie" Hussain, was present during the resentencing hearings, highlighting the enduring pain and loss experienced by the victim's family. Despite Ashe's claims of self-defense and accidental shooting, the court ultimately held her accountable for the fatal outcome of the robbery attempt.
