Joseph Bruce Burtner, a 23-year-old officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, tragically lost his life on December 12, 1995, in Jacksonville, Florida. The suspect, Winston Dixon, had left a suicide message on his answering machine, prompting the police to intervene.
After repeated attempts to contact Dixon failed, Officer Burtner, with the approval of his superiors, attempted to force entry into the house. Upon breaching the doorway, Officer Burtner was ambushed and fatally shot by Dixon, who used an AK-47 rifle. Dixon later claimed that he believed his house was being burglarized and acted in self-defense.
