Vernon Matthew Williams, a 39-year-old white male, tragically lost his life on September 28, 2006, in Lakeland, Florida. Williams, a dedicated deputy sheriff with the Polk County Sheriff's Office, was killed in the line of duty. He had been serving the community since 1994 and was well-regarded for his commitment and bravery. On the day of his death, Williams and his K-9 partner, Diogi, were involved in a pursuit following a traffic stop.
The suspect fled on foot into a wooded area, prompting Williams and another deputy to give chase. During the search, the suspect opened fire, fatally shooting Williams multiple times and killing Diogi as well. The other deputy was also wounded in the leg but survived the encounter.
