Kody Zawalski, a 20-year-old resident of Lakeland, Florida, tragically lost his life on January 11, 2015, as a result of injuries sustained during a violent home invasion. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Kody moved to Florida as a child and eventually settled in Lakeland with his family. He was known for his active participation in the ROTC program at Lake Gibson High School and had a passion for music, racing, movies, and the beach.
At the time of his death, Kody was employed at C & S Wholesalers.
The home invasion that led to Kody's death was a harrowing event. On the night of January 11, 2015, a group of eight people, including Kody, were at a residence on Chase Road in Lakeland. Two armed men, Auban Christopher Carter and Tobarais Dontrell Hudson, entered the home, demanding money and drugs. Despite being given a small amount of marijuana and $35, the intruders became agitated and opened fire on the occupants. Kody, who was inside the house sleeping on the couch, was shot five times and succumbed to his injuries. Four other individuals were also injured during the attack, with one victim, Levi Atkinson, suffering severe spinal injuries that initially left him paralyzed from the waist down.
Following the incident, a grand jury indicted Carter and Hudson on first-degree murder charges, along with multiple counts of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and other related charges. The investigation revealed that the two men had planned the robbery and were armed with a pistol and an assault rifle. The case garnered significant attention, and the community closely followed the legal proceedings.
In October 2017, Auban Carter was convicted of first-degree murder and a series of attempted murder charges. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Tobarais Hudson, who faced a similar fate, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in exchange for his testimony against Carter. Hudson's cooperation with the prosecution provided crucial evidence that helped secure Carter's conviction. The sentencing brought a sense of relief to Kody's family, who had endured the emotional toll of the lengthy legal process.
