The impact of the gunshot caused him to lose control of the vehicle, veering off the road, through bushes and a fence, before crashing into a house located in the 200
block of Tennessee Drive. Authorities initially treated the wreck as a traffic crash, but once McNair was taken to Baptist Hospital, doctors discovered the gunshot wound that had lodged in his head.
The male victim, age 57, suffered catastrophic injuries from the bullet. His brother, Henry McNair, age 62, later explained that a significant portion of his brain had been destroyed by the impact, and even had he survived, he would have been left in a vegetative state. Despite the medical team's efforts, Daniel Michael McNair succumbed to his injuries at Baptist Hospital around 10 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2009, one day after the shooting.
Law enforcement officials in Escambia County confirmed that the male victim's death was being investigated as a homicide. Deputies with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office reported that they had no suspects or witnesses immediately following the incident. Sergeant Ted Roy, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, stated that once the shooter was identified, murder charges would be brought. However, at the time of his death, there were no arrests made and no identified suspect in the case.
Graveside services for Daniel Michael McNair, the 57-year-old male victim, were planned at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Pensacola.
