Officer Crawford was responding to a report of a suspicious person in a neighborhood near Tropicana Field. At approximately 10:30 PM, he and another officer arrived at the scene after a citizen reported seeing a male walking through his backyard with a broken brick in his hand.
Officer Crawford canvassed the area and located the suspect near the southwest corner of 2nd Avenue S and 8th Street S. As he approached the individual, an exchange of gunfire ensued, during which Officer Crawford was shot multiple times. Despite being rushed to Bayfront Medical Center, he succumbed to his injuries. Notably, Officer Crawford was not wearing his protective vest at the time of the incident.
The suspect, a 16-year-old male named Nicholas Lindsey, fled the scene but was apprehended after a 24-hour manhunt. Lindsey was subsequently charged with first-degree murder.
