Johana Nunez, a 35-year-old woman, was tragically killed on August 15, 2013, in Golden Gate, FL. The incident occurred inside her home at 3032 50th St. S.W., where she and her 18-year-old son, Joseph Suazo, were found dead. Both victims had been shot multiple times with a revolver. The suspect, Jose Suazo, 48, who was Johana's husband and Joseph's father, was apprehended shortly after the incident during a traffic stop on Interstate 75 in Lee County.

Jose Suazo had previously been arrested in 2007 on a charge of battery following a domestic violence complaint. Jose Suazo was initially charged with two counts of second-degree murder but was later indicted for premeditated first-degree murder. He was held in the Lee County Jail awaiting trial. However, before the trial could proceed, Jose Suazo, who was terminally ill, was transferred to Avow Hospice Center in Naples. He died of natural causes while under guard at the hospice center in June 2014.
