Angela Limbaugh, aged 51, tragically lost her life on June 19, 2019, in Ocklawaha, Florida. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when a fire broke out at her residence located at 16663 SE 53rd St. Marion County firefighters responded to the blaze, which had fully engulfed the home and caused part of the structure to collapse. Amidst the firefighting efforts, a cache of ammunition inside the house began discharging, complicating the situation further.
After the fire was extinguished, the firefighters discovered Angela Limbaugh's body inside the charred remains of the house.
The investigation into Angela Limbaugh's death quickly revealed a disturbing series of events. Her 22-year-old son, Colby Glen Larue, turned himself in at a nearby Marion County sheriff's office shortly after the incident. Larue allegedly confessed to killing his mother and setting their home on fire. According to his statements to the detectives, Larue had been watching YouTube videos that made him paranoid, leading him to believe that someone was going to harm or rape his mother. In a state of heightened paranoia, he armed himself with a pump-action shotgun, which he found to be inoperable, and then took a 9mm semi-automatic pistol from his waistband.
Larue recounted that his mother woke up and came downstairs, at which point he shot her twice in the head, causing her to fall. He also admitted to shooting the family dog twice before setting fire to his mattress using a lighter. After committing these acts, Larue left the gun inside the house, got into a rowboat, and rowed across a lake to a nearby house where a bonfire was burning. He had a brief interaction with the people there, who told him to leave, after which he ran into the woods shirtless. Eventually, he made his way to the Winn-Dixie Plaza at Forest Corners, where he spoke to a homeless man who gave him a shirt. Larue then proceeded to the Marion County Sheriff's Office and turned himself in.
Colby Glen Larue was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree arson of a dwelling and homicide. His statements to the detectives indicated that he believed he was protecting his mother from imagined threats. The case drew significant attention due to the tragic nature of the events and the mental state of the suspect. The legal proceedings that followed focused on Larue's mental health and the circumstances that led to the horrific incident.
