As Thomas and his friends were driving away from the club, a black pickup truck pulled up alongside their vehicle and fired multiple shots. One of the bullets struck Thomas in the head, resulting in his death.
The investigation into Thomas's death revealed that Ricardo Garcia, also from Palmetto, was involved in a fight with another individual at the nightclub. Mistaking Thomas's vehicle for that of the person he had fought with, Garcia pursued and fired at the car, making Thomas an innocent victim of mistaken identity.
