Deputy Sheriff Edward Matthews, a law enforcement officer with the Manatee County Sheriff's Office in Florida, was tragically killed on March 6, 1910, near Palmetto. He was attempting to apprehend a murder suspect who was wanted for killing his employer over a wage dispute. Bloodhounds led Deputy Matthews and his posse to a home where the suspect was hiding.
