The incident occurred at a residence on Caroma Lane, where Fredi was with his girlfriend, Lety Hernandez, and another individual named Luis Landaverde. According to reports, Lety Hernandez, who was 17 years old at the time, was upset with Fredi for taking a Xanax pill.
In an attempt to intimidate him, she grabbed his gun, removed the magazine, and pointed it at his head, believing it was unloaded. Unfortunately, when she pulled the trigger, the gun discharged, fatally wounding Fredi.
Following the shooting, Lety Hernandez and Luis Landaverde initially attempted to stage the scene to make it appear as though Fredi had taken his own life. They claimed that Fredi, who was facing legal troubles and had a baby on the way, was overwhelmed and decided to end his life. However, days later, both Lety and Luis confessed to the authorities that the shooting was accidental. Lety admitted to not knowing the gun was loaded when she pulled the trigger.
Lety Hernandez was subsequently charged with manslaughter and held on a $25,000 bail. She was placed under house arrest with a monitoring device upon her release. The case drew significant attention due to the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the initial attempts to mislead investigators.
In September 2016, Lety Hernandez was sentenced to six years in prison for the accidental shooting of Fredi Hernandez. The court acknowledged the tragic nature of the incident and the impact it had on both families involved.
