On a warm summer evening in late July of 2014, the life of 20-year-old Devin Cook was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence in Northwest Baltimore. A promising lacrosse player and student at the Community College of Baltimore County, Devin was known for his kind heart and infectious humor. He was a beloved son and a role model to his younger brother.
On the night of July 31st, after a lacrosse game in Howard County, Devin was driving friends home.
After dropping one friend off, he received a phone call and drove to the 4700 block of Wilern Avenue with another friend. There, he met with a male, and after a brief conversation, the man opened fire, shooting Devin multiple times. His friend, who remained in the car, was also wounded but survived the attack. Devin, however, succumbed to his injuries at the scene before paramedics could arrive. Residents in the area reported hearing three gunshots followed by the sound of a car speeding away.
In the wake of the shooting, the Baltimore community was left reeling. Friends, family, and coaches remembered Devin as a motivated and good-natured young man with a bright future ahead of him. He was not involved in gangs or drugs, leaving investigators puzzled as to a motive for his murder. Despite a person of interest being identified at one point, the case grew cold. To this day, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly named in the murder of Devin Cook. His death remains an unsolved homicide, a painful loss for all who knew him and a lingering mystery for the city of Baltimore.
