LaBreka Brittany Evans, a 29-year-old resident of Jacksonville, Florida, tragically passed away on April 26, 2015. Her death was the result of a violent altercation with her longtime boyfriend, Calvin Tyrone Andrews Jr. The couple had been together for nine years and shared a home on Woodland Street with their six-year-old child. Evans also had another ten-year-old child from a previous relationship.
On the day of the incident, Evans and Andrews were involved in a heated argument that escalated into physical violence. During the altercation, Andrews retrieved a handgun and shot Evans in the stomach. Despite his efforts to drive her to the hospital, Evans succumbed to her injuries two days later.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office quickly launched an investigation into the incident. Initially, Andrews was charged with aggravated battery, but the charges were upgraded to second-degree murder following Evans' death. The investigation revealed a history of domestic violence between the couple, with documented incidents in 2008 and 2012. Neighbors reported hearing arguing and a loud bang on the day of the shooting, and one neighbor recounted Evans' desperate plea for help, indicating that Andrews had tried to kill her.
In March 2016, Andrews was found guilty of second-degree murder. During the trial, it was revealed that the couple had been arguing over changes to party plans, which led to the fatal confrontation. Andrews' criminal history, which included resisting arrest, battery on a law enforcement officer, check fraud, and careless driving, was also brought to light. The court sentenced Andrews to life in prison for the murder of LaBreka Evans, bringing some measure of justice to her family and loved ones.
