In the fall of 2014, the vibrant Fells Point neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland, was shaken by the untimely death of Claudia Parodi, a 40-year-old woman originally from Peru. A beloved and popular server at the local restaurant Pazo, her sudden absence from work prompted a concerned coworker to raise the alarm. On the evening of October 6th, police were flagged down and asked to check on her welfare. Gaining entry to her apartment on South Bond Street, they made a grim discovery. Parodi was found deceased, having been fatally stabbed. Investigators believe the attack occurred two days earlier, on October 4th.
The investigation quickly focused on a person of interest: Parodi's 29-year-old boyfriend, Juan Morales, who also went by the name Jose Lopez. Police publicly identified him as a suspect in her murder. In the days following the discovery of Parodi's body, it became evident that Morales had fled the area. Investigators believed he might have traveled to San Antonio, Texas, with the ultimate goal of crossing the border into Mexico. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and law enforcement agencies were notified to be on the lookout for him.
For several years, the case remained in a state of uncertainty as Morales evaded capture. The search for the man suspected of ending Claudia Parodi's life stretched across international borders. However, in July of 2018, there was a significant breakthrough in the case. Juan Morales was reportedly captured in the Mexican state of Tlaxcala. Following his apprehension, the process of extraditing him back to the United States to face charges for Parodi's murder was initiated, marking a long-awaited step towards securing justice for the woman whose life was tragically cut short.
