Marquis Grooms, a 24-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on January 20, 2016, in Sanford, Florida. The incident occurred at the Kensington Oaks Apartments on Mellonville Avenue near Lake Monroe. According to reports, officers responded to a 911 call and found Marquis Grooms shot dead inside an apartment. A woman, identified as Whitney McCloud, was also found at the scene with a gunshot wound to her hand. She was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect in the shooting, Tonney McCants, was arrested shortly after the incident. McCants turned himself in to the authorities at 6:30 a.m. the following day. According to the police report, the shooting happened inside the apartment, and there were indications that children might have been present during the incident. Neighbors reported hearing a commotion and seeing someone running in and out of the apartment.

Further investigation revealed that Marquis Grooms had broken into the apartment of McCants' girlfriend and began assaulting her. This led to McCants shooting Grooms in what was later determined to be an act of self-defense. The case was reviewed under Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, which ultimately led to the charges against McCants being dropped.
