On November 30, 2021, a mass shooting at Oxford High School in Oxford Township, Michigan, resulted in the death of 16-year-old male student Tate Myre and three other students. Myre was a junior and an honor student who played on the school's varsity football team. During the attack, he was reportedly shot while attempting to disarm the gunman. A sheriff's deputy rushed him to the hospital in a squad car, but he died from his injuries en route.
The perpetrator of the shooting was 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley, a sophomore at the school. He opened fire with a 9mm SIG Sauer SP 2022 semi-automatic pistol, killing four students and injuring seven other people, including a teacher. The entire incident lasted about five minutes before Crumbley surrendered to deputies at the school.
Ethan Crumbley was arrested at the scene and was subsequently charged as an adult with 24 crimes, including one count of terrorism causing death, four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to murder, and twelve counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony. In October 2022, he pleaded guilty to all charges. In December 2023, Crumbley was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Ethan Crumbley's parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, were also arrested and each charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter. The gun used in the shooting had been purchased by his father just days before the incident. Prosecutors argued that the parents were negligent in allowing their son to have access to the weapon. In separate trials, both James and Jennifer Crumbley were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. In April 2024, they were each sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison.
