On November 30, 2021, a mass shooting occurred at Oxford High School in Oxford Township, Michigan. The perpetrator, 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley, a sophomore at the school, opened fire with a 9mm SIG Sauer SP 2022 semi-automatic pistol. During the attack, he killed four students and injured seven other people, including a teacher. One of the students who tragically lost his life was Justin Shilling, a 17-year-old male student.
Justin Shilling was critically injured during the shooting and was transported to a nearby hospital. He fought for his life but succumbed to his injuries on the morning of December 1, 2021, becoming the fourth and final fatality of the senseless act of violence. Described as a hardworking and beloved young man, Justin was a co-captain of the school's bowling team and also a golfer. He was known for his kind and inclusive nature, and his death left a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the entire Oxford community.
The shooter, Ethan Crumbley, was taken into custody at the scene of the crime. He was charged as an adult with 24 crimes, including one count of terrorism causing death, four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to murder, and 12 counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony. In October 2022, Crumbley pleaded guilty to all charges. In December 2023, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The investigation into the shooting also led to the unprecedented prosecution of the shooter's parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley. They were each charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter for their role in the events that led to the tragedy. It was revealed that the handgun used in the shooting had been purchased for their son as a Christmas present just days before the massacre. The parents were accused of failing to secure the weapon and ignoring numerous warning signs about their son's deteriorating mental state and potential for violence. In separate trials in February and March of 2024, both James and Jennifer Crumbley were found guilty of all four counts of involuntary manslaughter and were subsequently sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison.
