Dontae Levaughn Alston, a 30-year-old resident of Jacksonville, Florida, tragically lost his life on November 16, 2016. Alston was fatally shot in his home on Wright Avenue, located in the Pine Forest neighborhood on Jacksonville's Southside. The incident occurred around 1:45 p.m., and despite the efforts of responding officers, including a rookie officer on his first day of field training, Alston succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting was the result of an argument over drugs between two men, Keith Hasheem Hines, 29, and Deshawn Antwan Robertson, 24, and an unnamed third individual. During the altercation, Hines and Robertson opened fire on the third man, who managed to escape unharmed. Unfortunately, a stray bullet from the gunfire penetrated the wall of Alston's home, striking and killing him, an innocent bystander not involved in the dispute.
Following the incident, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the suspects. Hines and Robertson were quickly identified as the primary suspects in Alston's death. Warrants were issued for their arrest, and the duo was eventually located and apprehended by U.S. Marshals at a motel in Rocky Point, North Carolina, after an anonymous tip was received by First Coast Crime Stoppers. Both suspects faced multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon, and failure to appear in court. They were held without bail and scheduled to appear in court on March 30, 2017.
