Rasheed Cunningham Jr., an 8-year-old African American boy, was tragically shot and killed on December 28, 2016, in Dania Beach, Florida, a neighborhood near Fort Lauderdale. Rasheed was walking home from his cousin's birthday party with a group of family members when a car pulled up and someone inside opened fire. The incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. in the 200 block of Northwest Ninth Avenue.
Rasheed was struck by the gunfire and was later pronounced dead at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood, Florida.
The shooting also injured Rasheed's cousin, Brandon Cunningham, who was shot multiple times in the back as he tried to shield the children from the bullets. Another woman and a young girl were also wounded in the attack. The Broward County Sheriff's Office reported that this shooting was the fourth in the Dania Beach area since Christmas, with three of the incidents believed to be related.
Rasheed's grandfather, Rodney Daughtry, suggested that the shooting was a retaliatory act linked to a fatal shooting that occurred six years prior. According to Daughtry, the violence was part of an ongoing feud involving a local gang. The suspected shooter, 19-year-old Arvis Yatil Brown, was arrested in Tallahassee shortly after the incident. Brown was believed to be responsible for a series of retaliatory shootings in the area, including the murder of 25-year-old Christopher Jordan on Christmas Day, who was also related to Rasheed.
The investigation revealed that Brown had recently been released from prison and sought vengeance against Jordan, whom he believed was involved in a previous shooting. This chain of retaliatory violence culminated in the tragic death of Rasheed Cunningham Jr. The community was left in mourning, with family and friends gathering to remember the young boy who was described as a good student and a talented football player.
The Broward County Sheriff's Office continued to investigate the shootings, seeking the public's help in gathering information and evidence. The senseless killing of Rasheed Cunningham Jr. highlighted the devastating impact of gang-related violence on innocent lives and underscored the urgent need for community intervention and support to prevent further tragedies.
