Master Sgt. Debra Lucinda, who was posthumously promoted to Lieutenant, tragically lost her life on January 9, 2017, in Orlando, Florida. She was shot and killed in the line of duty while attempting to apprehend a wanted murder suspect in the parking lot of a Walmart at the intersection of Princeton Street and John Young Parkway. A citizen had informed her that the suspect, Markeith Loyd, was inside the store.
As she approached the building, Loyd exited and opened fire, striking her multiple times. Loyd was wanted for the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend and the shooting of her brother a month prior.
Following the shooting, Loyd carjacked a vehicle and fled the scene. A captain from the Orange County Sheriff's Office spotted the vehicle shortly after and was shot at by Loyd. The intense manhunt for Loyd lasted until January 17, 2017, when he was finally captured. During the search, Deputy First Class Norman Lewis of the Orange County Sheriff's Office was killed in a motorcycle crash while pursuing Loyd.
Loyd was convicted of first-degree murder in November 2021 and was subsequently sentenced to death in March 2022. The case drew significant attention due to the brutal nature of the crimes and the extensive efforts by law enforcement to bring Loyd to justice. Lieutenant Clayton's death highlighted the dangers faced by police officers and the sacrifices they make to protect their communities. She had served with the Orlando Police Department for 17 years and was survived by her husband and son. Her dedication and bravery continue to be remembered and honored by her colleagues and the community.
