YolizMarie DeJesus Borrero, a 22-year-old Hispanic woman, was tragically killed on April 30, 2014, in Orlando, Florida. John Michael DeJesus, who was 29 years old at the time, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. During the investigation, a neighbor's surveillance footage showed a man running from the direction of DeJesus's house to a nearby lake and then returning around the time of the shooting. The murder weapon was later found submerged in that lake. Additionally, YolizMarie's four-year-old son inadvertently implicated DeJesus after watching a scene in the film "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," where a character is killed. The boy told a family member, "That's how daddy killed mommy," which further supported the case against DeJesus.
Throughout the trial, prosecutors highlighted inconsistencies in DeJesus's account of the events. They argued that the physical evidence at the crime scene did not align with his story of a home invasion. The jury found DeJesus guilty of first-degree murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. As part of his sentence, DeJesus was also prohibited from having any contact with his daughter or other members of YolizMarie's family.
