Wallace Dean Worman, an 87-year-old white male, passed away unexpectedly on October 22, 2017, in Casselberry, Florida. Worman, a retired Air Force pilot and a beloved member of his community, was known for his warm demeanor and active participation in his local church. On the day of his death, Worman had picked up dinner from Boston’s Fish House in Winter Park before being carjacked by Edward Israel Marrero, a 23-year-old man with a history of criminal activity.
Marrero forced Worman into his own car and drove him to a bank, where he used Worman’s debit card to withdraw money. Marrero then drove Worman to his home in Casselberry, where he robbed him of cash and credit cards before fatally shooting him. The crime appeared to be entirely random, with no prior connection between Worman and Marrero.
Investigators pieced together the events leading to Worman’s death through surveillance footage and witness accounts.
Marrero, who had recently been released from prison for aggravated stalking, was arrested and charged with Worman’s murder. However, before he could be transferred to the Seminole County Jail, Marrero was found unresponsive in his cell after an apparent suicide attempt. He was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he died shortly after. Marrero's death brought an abrupt end to the legal proceedings, leaving the community to mourn the loss of Worman and grapple with the senselessness of the crime.
The investigation into Worman’s death revealed Marrero’s troubled past, including a severe drug habit and a string of burglaries leading up to the murder. Despite the tragic circumstances, Worman’s memory lives on through the many lives he touched, particularly at Aloma United Methodist Church, where he served as the chief usher.
