Brandi Celenza, a 25-year-old resident of Palm Coast, Florida, tragically died on April 7, 2018. On that morning, her husband, Keith Johansen, called 911 to report that Brandi had been shot. He claimed to have heard gunshots while he was in the shower. Brandi was found with two gunshot wounds from a 9mm handgun, one in the center of her chest and another in her right breast. Initially, Johansen suggested that Brandi might have accidentally shot herself, but the police quickly ruled out both accidental death and suicide. An autopsy conducted on April 9 confirmed that Brandi's death was a homicide.
The investigation into Brandi's death revealed significant evidence against Johansen. Surveillance footage from inside their home showed the couple engaged in a heated argument two days before the shooting. Johansen had installed multiple cameras throughout the house, including in the master bedroom where the shooting occurred. However, the camera in the bedroom had been removed two days prior to the incident. During the 911 call, Johansen was seen on camera hiding evidence of narcotics and failing to provide adequate assistance to Brandi, despite instructions from the dispatcher.
Three weeks after Brandi's death, Johansen was arrested and initially charged with second-degree murder. The charge was later upgraded to first-degree murder when investigators uncovered more evidence, including the surveillance footage of the couple's arguments. Johansen's inconsistent statements and attempts to blame others, including suggesting that Brandi's six-year-old son or a neighbor might have been responsible, further undermined his credibility.
The trial for Keith Johansen began in October 2021. During the trial, Johansen claimed self-defense, but his testimony did not convince the jury. After deliberating for less than three hours, the jury found Johansen guilty of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of domestic violence and left Brandi's family and young son to cope with the aftermath of her untimely death.
