Raequan Nicholas Haywood, an 18-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on September 2, 2018, in West Palm Beach, Florida. Known affectionately as "Nugi," Raequan was remembered as a gentleman and a ladies' man, who had a down-to-earth attitude and was always willing to help others. Despite suffering from hemophilia, a rare blood disease, he had dreams of playing football and was focused on a career in music.
On the night of his death, Raequan was in a vehicle with two other individuals when a confrontation occurred between Jabari Q. Blye, a 23-year-old male from Riviera Beach, and a woman who was also in the car. As the vehicle attempted to leave, Blye fired shots into the windshield, striking Raequan. He was rushed to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Raequan's death led to the arrest of Jabari Q. Blye. Blye was charged with first-degree murder, but later accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to second-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder. On January 28, 2020, Blye was sentenced to 35 years in prison. During the sentencing hearing, Blye caused multiple disruptions, leading the judge to have him removed from the courtroom until he calmed down. The courtroom was filled with emotional moments as Blye's family and friends expressed their support for him, despite the gravity of his actions.
Raequan's death had a profound impact on his community. His childhood friend, Davion Crometie, who was supposed to be a pallbearer at Raequan's funeral, was also shot and killed just four days after Raequan's death. This series of tragic events highlighted the pervasive issue of gun violence in the community and left a lasting mark on those who knew and loved Raequan.
