Quantavious Damariuse Wilson, a 23-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on September 14, 2019, in Madison, Florida. The incident occurred when Wilson attempted to intervene in a physical altercation between two men over a bicycle. The altercation took place in the Madison Heights area just before 9 a.m. on that fateful Saturday morning.
Wilson, known for his past as a Madison County Cowboy football player, stepped in to break up the fight, demonstrating his courage and sense of responsibility.
Unfortunately, the situation escalated when one of the men involved in the fight, De’Vante Jaquan Washington, a 25-year-old male from Madison, left the scene, retrieved a firearm, and returned to shoot Wilson. The shooting resulted in Wilson's immediate death at the scene. Washington fled but later turned himself in to the police around 3:40 p.m. the same day. He was subsequently arrested and charged with homicide. The case was handled by the Madison Police Department in collaboration with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).
The legal proceedings following Wilson's death were significant. Washington was booked into the Madison County Jail, and additional charges were pending at the time. The prosecution of the case was undertaken by the Office of the State Attorney for the 3rd Judicial Circuit. This tragic event not only highlighted the senselessness of violence but also the swift action taken by law enforcement to bring the perpetrator to justice. The community of Madison, Florida, mourned the loss of a young man who had shown promise and bravery in his final moments.
