Iyana McGraw, a 19-year-old African American woman, was tragically killed on October 7, 2019, in Jacksonville, Florida. Iyana was nine months pregnant at the time of her death. The incident occurred at her apartment on Justina Road, where she lived with her boyfriend, Miles Davis Hall. On the day of the shooting, George Prince Jr., a 30-year-old man, believed that Hall had shot at his apartment earlier in the day due to a drug-related feud.
Seeking retaliation, Prince went to Iyana's apartment to "send a message" to Hall. When Iyana informed Prince that Hall was not present, Prince fired multiple shots at the front door and windows, striking Iyana multiple times. Despite the efforts of first responders, Iyana succumbed to her injuries. Her baby, Milan Isla McGraw, was delivered but tragically died three months later due to complications from the shooting.
The investigation into Iyana McGraw's death led to the arrest of George Prince Jr. in December 2021. Prince was charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Iyana and her baby. During the trial, witnesses testified that Prince had attempted to recruit them for the shooting, expressing his willingness to kill women and children. The jury took only 15 minutes to convict Prince, and he was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. His co-defendant, Gerod Deshea Fields, who drove Prince to and from the scene and was found with the murder weapon, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and is awaiting sentencing.
The case also involved Miles Davis Hall, Iyana's boyfriend, who was arrested in December 2019 on charges of possession of a firearm by a felon. During the investigation, police discovered multiple firearms, ammunition, and marijuana packaged for sale in their apartment. Hall pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years in prison, with credit for time served. He was released in November 2021.
