On June 27, 2020, 26-year-old Ashleigh Murphy was fatally shot in her home on Fairland Road near Ormond Beach, Florida. Authorities responded to a 911 call placed by her boyfriend, 22-year-old Winter Richardson, who reported the incident and cooperated with law enforcement upon their arrival. Murphy was found with a gunshot wound to her upper body and was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office conducted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Murphy's death. According to their findings, the shooting occurred during a consensual sexual encounter between Murphy and Richardson. Murphy had requested that Richardson point a revolver at her during the act. Complying with her request, Richardson pulled the trigger twice; the second pull discharged a bullet that struck Murphy in the shoulder and back, leading to her fatal injuries.
Following the investigation, detectives concluded that Richardson's negligence was a significant factor in Murphy's death. Specifically, his failure to ensure the revolver was unloaded before pointing it at Murphy and pulling the trigger was deemed reckless. As a result, on August 12, 2020, Richardson was arrested and charged with manslaughter. He was subsequently held at the Volusia County Branch Jail on a $10,000 bond.
In the legal proceedings that followed, Richardson was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in Murphy's death. The case underscores the critical importance of firearm safety and the severe consequences that can arise from negligent handling of weapons, even in consensual scenarios.
