Phillip James Simmons Jr., aged 26, tragically lost his life on October 21, 2020, in Fort Pierce, Florida. He was one of two victims in a double homicide that occurred at the Madison Cay Apartment Homes. The other victim was Emily Marie Gordon, aged 25. Both individuals were found near the parking lot of the apartment complex, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite being transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, they succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival.
The investigation into the murders revealed that the suspect, Tyriek Jacari Ganious, had an altercation with the victims prior to the shooting. Surveillance footage captured the moments leading up to the incident, showing Ganious interacting with the victims before drawing a firearm and shooting them multiple times. Ganious was arrested on October 26, 2020, initially for an unrelated weapons charge. During his arrest, he was found wearing clothing similar to that seen on the suspect in the surveillance footage.
Ganious was formally charged with the murders on December 10, 2021. The trial, which began on September 12, 2023, concluded with Ganious being found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder with a firearm. He was sentenced to two life terms in prison, with an additional 30 years for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The case was a significant one for the Fort Pierce Police Department, with Chief Diane Hobley-Burney commending the dedication and hard work of the officers involved in bringing Ganious to justice.
