Sara Cancel Urriola, a 30-year-old resident of Jacksonville, Florida, tragically lost her life on February 8, 2021, in a triple homicide at the Calloway Cove Apartments. Born in Panama, Sara had moved to the United States to pursue a brighter future and was deeply loved by her family and friends. She had a promising career in criminal justice, having worked briefly at the State Attorney's Office in Jacksonville and was pursuing a master's degree at Florida State University at the time of her
death.
On the night of the incident, members of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office's gang unit were in the vicinity when they heard gunshots. They soon discovered the crime scene where Sara and two other victims, Randy Garcia and Angel Rivera Nater, were found dead from gunshot wounds. The investigation revealed that the shooting stemmed from a confrontation that escalated into violence. The police also found a significant amount of Oxycontin pills, a large ball of unknown white powder, and cash at the scene.
Four teenagers were arrested in connection with the triple homicide. Alana Rae Sears, a 14-year-old girl, was identified as the driver of the getaway car. Along with her, Kyshawn Lamont Glover and Owen Maoma Laureano-Cosme, both 17, and 18-year-old Keon Hunter Lester were apprehended. All four were charged with second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit robbery. The vehicle they used had been reported stolen from Clay County, and the suspects were found with three guns in their possession.
The case saw significant developments as it progressed through the legal system. Owen Maoma Laureano-Cosme, one of the suspects, was later indicted on three counts of first-degree murder. In July 2022, two of the suspects pleaded guilty to their charges, marking a pivotal moment in the pursuit of justice for Sara and the other victims.
