Shandell Harris, a 30-year-old woman from Miami, FL, tragically lost her life on April 3, 2022, in a violent incident at the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center in North Miami Beach. The events leading to her death began the day before, when her husband, Carl Watts Jr., allegedly stabbed her at their North Miami apartment. Harris managed to escape and sought refuge at her mother's house, where they contacted the police.
Despite their efforts, Watts was not apprehended at that time.
The following day, Harris, accompanied by her mother and 12-year-old daughter, went to the community center for her daughter's swimming lessons. Watts arrived at the center and confronted Harris, offering her money to drop the charges related to the stabbing. When she refused and asked him to leave, Watts pulled out a gun and began shooting. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing Watts chase Harris before shooting her multiple times. He continued to fire until he ran out of ammunition, at which point he was detained by private security.
Watts was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder. During his court appearance, the judge questioned why the charge was not elevated to first-degree murder, given the premeditated nature of the attack. Watts has a history of criminal activity and is also a person of interest in the 2014 disappearance of Trukita Scott, a Fort Lauderdale woman who shares a child with him. The investigation into Harris's death revealed the heightened risk of homicide in domestic violence cases involving firearms, underscoring the tragic consequences of such violence.
Harris's family described her as a dedicated mother with aspirations of becoming a Miami-Dade commissioner. They expressed their grief and disbelief over her untimely death, emphasizing that she did not deserve such a fate. The case has drawn attention to the broader issues of domestic violence and the need for more effective measures to protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable.
