Cory Schweitzer, a 31-year-old Marion County Sheriff's Office detention deputy, tragically lost his life on August 19, 2022, in Pine Ridge, Florida. On that day, deputies responded to a call regarding a potential suicide at a residence in Pine Ridge Estates. Upon arrival, they found Schweitzer with an apparent gunshot wound and unresponsive. Despite initial reports suggesting a possible suicide, further investigation by the Citrus County Sheriff's Office revealed that Schweitzer had been
murdered.
The investigation quickly focused on Schweitzer's ex-girlfriend, Jacqueline Jasmin Johnson-Cabrera. Detectives gathered and analyzed forensic evidence from the scene, which led them to conclude that Johnson-Cabrera was responsible for Schweitzer's death. On August 24, 2022, a warrant was issued for her arrest, and she was subsequently taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder and armed residential burglary.
The case proceeded through the legal system, and on June 29, 2024, Johnson-Cabrera pleaded guilty to the charges. During the court proceedings, Schweitzer's sister delivered a poignant victim impact statement, highlighting the profound and lasting impact of the crime on their family. The court sentenced Johnson-Cabrera to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring that she would spend the rest of her life behind bars for her actions.
Schweitzer's death was a significant loss to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, where he had served since March 2019. He was well-regarded by his colleagues and had been recognized for his dedication and service, including being named Employee of the Month in June 2021.
