Aaron Valle, an 18-year-old high school senior from Palm Beach Central High School, tragically lost his life on December 10, 2016, in a double homicide that also claimed the life of 17-year-old Elijah Montas. The incident occurred at the Serrano Apartments in West Palm Beach, Florida. Both teens were found with gunshot wounds, and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office immediately launched an investigation into the case.
The community was left in shock and mourning, with concerns about the rising violence among young people in the area.
The investigation revealed that Aaron Valle and Elijah Montas were victims of a robbery gone wrong. Joel Rodriguez, who was 20 years old at the time, was identified as the perpetrator. Rodriguez had a history of violent crimes and was also responsible for the murder of 18-year-old Dalton Dobkins just a few weeks prior to the double homicide. During the robbery, Rodriguez used the same firearm to fatally shoot both Valle and Montas. Carlos Amaya Hernandez, who was with Rodriguez during the incident, was also implicated in the crime.
In 2019, Joel Rodriguez pleaded guilty to the murders of Aaron Valle, Elijah Montas, and Dalton Dobkins. He was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. Carlos Amaya Hernandez also pleaded guilty to his involvement in the double homicide and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. The court proceedings brought some closure to the families of the victims, although the pain of their loss remains.
The case highlighted the dangers of gun violence and the impact it has on communities. It also underscored the importance of addressing the root causes of such violence to prevent future tragedies. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office continues to work on initiatives to reduce crime and ensure the safety of its residents.
