On April 19, 1903, Deputy Marshal William E. Tibbet, aged 43, was tragically killed in Bakersfield, California. The incident occurred during a shootout involving Bakersfield City Marshal Thomas Jefferson Packard and outlaw Jim McKinney. The confrontation took place at the Joss House, a known hotspot for criminal activity.
