William Franklin Edwards, a Deputy Sheriff in Mono County, California, tragically lost his life on April 29, 1907, in Benton, CA. Edwards was attempting to arrest three men for public drunkenness when the incident occurred. The three men had been harassing a young woman near the town's depot, prompting two citizens to intervene and run them off. These citizens later informed Deputy Edwards of the incident and accompanied him back to the area to make the arrests.
