William Cunningham Deane-Tanner, better known by his stage name William Desmond Taylor, was a prominent Anglo-Irish-American film director and actor in early Hollywood. On February 1, 1922, Taylor was found dead in his Los Angeles bungalow, having been shot in the back. His murder sent shockwaves through the Hollywood community and became one of the most sensationalized cases of the era.
