Lieutenant Frank S. Greene, a dedicated officer of the Coronado Police Department in California, tragically lost his life on October 12, 1954, at the age of 44. Greene was performing his duties when he made a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle occupied by three individuals. During the interaction, a struggle ensued, and Lieutenant Greene was shot. His partner, a U.S. Navy patrolman, immediately called for assistance. The suspects, who were planning a robbery, were apprehended shortly after the incident and charged with Greene's murder.
The investigation into Lieutenant Greene's death revealed that the suspects had intended to commit a robbery. On January 24, 1955, the shooter, aged 26, and another suspect, aged 38, were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. The third suspect, aged 21, was convicted of robbery conspiracy and received a sentence of 5 years to life. The shooter later faced additional charges; on February 23, 1967, he was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon after nearly beating a fellow inmate to death with a metal lamp base, resulting in another life term.
Lieutenant Greene's death was a significant loss to the Coronado community and the police department, where he had served for 18 years. He was remembered not only for his service but also for his earlier years as a college football player with the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes and a brief stint in the NFL with the Chicago Cardinals, now known as the Arizona Cardinals. Greene's legacy continues to be honored by his family, colleagues, and the community he served.
