On December 22, 1966, in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, 38-year-old Julia Cook and her 15-year-old son, Kenneth, were found murdered in their home. Both had been forced to kneel and were each shot twice in the head. Julia Cook had a criminal record related to drug possession. Authorities suspected that Robert Biehler, a known criminal associate of Cook's, feared she might inform the police about his involvement in a prostitution ring, which could have been a motive for the killings.
