Ambers O. Shewmaker, a 28-year-old California Highway Patrol officer, tragically lost his life on November 24, 1969, near Banning, California. On that fateful evening, Officer Shewmaker was conducting a routine traffic stop for a speeding vehicle on Interstate 10, near Apache Trail. Unbeknownst to him, the vehicle he had stopped was stolen, and the driver was a suspect in an earlier robbery in Riverside.
As Officer Shewmaker was using his radio to report the stop, the driver approached him and shot him point-blank in the head. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Officer Shewmaker succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The suspect, who was driving the stolen car, was apprehended 12 hours later after a high-speed chase in Palm Springs. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder. The trial concluded with the suspect being convicted and sentenced to death on March 14, 1971. The convicted murderer remained on death row until his death in prison in 2006.
Officer Shewmaker's death was a significant loss to the California Highway Patrol, where he had served for only nine months. He was remembered for his dedication and service, and in November 2014, a portion of the I-10 freeway where he was shot was dedicated in his honor. The case of his murder was thoroughly investigated, leading to the swift capture and conviction of his killer, ensuring justice was served for the fallen officer.
