Correctional Officer Jesus 'Jesse' Sanchez, aged 24, tragically lost his life on October 6, 1972, in Chino, California. Officer Sanchez was ambushed and fatally shot while escorting an inmate from the California Institution for Men to a court hearing in San Bernardino. The ambush occurred on Edison Avenue near Euclid Avenue when two cars forced the prison van off the road. The assailants, armed and determined, handcuffed both Officer Sanchez and his colleague before shooting them. Officer Sanchez succumbed to his injuries, while his colleague survived by feigning death.
The inmate being transported was a 35-year-old prisoner who had previously been sentenced for attempted robbery and had a history of escape attempts. In November 1970, he and another inmate had escaped, kidnapped a man and a 16-year-old girl, and forced them to drive to Arizona. They were eventually captured after a high-speed chase and returned to California to face additional charges of kidnapping and escape. Just weeks before the ambush, the inmate had been convicted of kidnapping.
The investigation into Officer Sanchez's murder revealed that the ambush was orchestrated by members of the Venceremos Revolutionary Organization, a far-left political group active in Palo Alto from 1969 to 1973. Two weeks after the murder, a 30-year-old man and an 18-year-old girl surrendered to FBI agents, admitting their involvement in the ambush. They provided the names of the primary assailants: a 23-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman. On December 11, 1972, the woman and the liberated prisoner were apprehended on the San Francisco Bay Bridge, armed with a sawed-off shotgun, pistols, grenades, and a rifle. They were charged with the murder of Officer Sanchez and the attempted murder of his colleague.
The final suspect was captured on December 18, 1972, in Palo Alto. All five individuals involved in the ambush were members of the Venceremos Revolutionary Organization. The liberated prisoner was convicted of first-degree murder on December 27, 1972, and received a life sentence in addition to his existing terms. He was also convicted in federal court for interstate kidnapping and sentenced to 20 years.
Officer Sanchez's death highlighted the dangers faced by correctional officers and led to increased security measures for the transportation of inmates. His sacrifice is remembered and honored by his colleagues and the community, ensuring that his legacy endures.
