Fernando E. Alcivar, a 24-year-old student, tragically lost his life on February 19, 1976, during a mass shooting at the Computer Learning Center in downtown Los Angeles. The perpetrator, Neil Jordan Liebeskind, an 18-year-old student at the center, carried out the attack with a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun. The incident began around 8:30 a.m. when Liebeskind, after assembling his weapon, stood up in the classroom and started shooting.
He first targeted Kenneth Pastore, a fellow student with whom he had frequent arguments. Alcivar, who was seated next to Pastore, was shot and succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting resulted in one fatality, Alcivar, and seven other injuries. Liebeskind continued his rampage through the building, shooting indiscriminately before being confronted by security guards from a nearby television crew. The guards, all former police officers, managed to subdue Liebeskind after a brief shootout, during which Liebeskind was severely wounded.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Liebeskind was charged with manslaughter and multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon. However, during his trial, he was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was subsequently committed to a mental hospital. The case highlighted significant issues regarding mental health and gun control, sparking discussions and debates in the community and beyond.
