Katie Maggiore, aged 20, was tragically murdered on February 2, 1978, in Rancho Cordova, a suburb of Sacramento, California. On that fateful evening, Katie and her husband, Brian Maggiore, were out for a walk with their dog when they were confronted by an armed assailant. The suspect shot Brian first, and then chased down and shot Katie as she attempted to flee.
Both succumbed to their injuries shortly after the attack.
For decades, the case remained unsolved, causing immense grief and frustration for the families of the victims. It wasn't until the early 2000s that investigators began to suspect that the Maggiore murders were connected to a series of crimes committed by the notorious East Area Rapist, also known as the Golden State Killer. This individual was responsible for numerous rapes and murders across California during the 1970s and 1980s.
The breakthrough in the case came in 2018 when DNA evidence led to the arrest of Joseph James DeAngelo, a former police officer. DeAngelo was charged with multiple counts of murder, including the killings of Katie and Brian Maggiore.
