Deputy Machado was shot and killed with his own service weapon during a struggle with an escaped mental patient. The incident occurred at the intersection of Highway 49 and Elm Avenue. The suspect, who had managed to seize Deputy Machado's weapon during the altercation, was later found walking along Interstate 80.
When confronted by officers from the California Highway Patrol and an Auburn Police sergeant, the suspect attempted to use Deputy Machado's weapon against them. In response, the officers fired several shotgun rounds, ultimately killing the suspect.
