On July 13, 1978, Deputy James E. Machado, aged 30, tragically lost his life in Auburn, California. Deputy Machado was shot and killed with his own service weapon during a struggle with an escaped mental patient. The incident occurred at the intersection of Highway 49 and Elm Avenue.
