George R. Barthel, a 32-year-old Deputy Sheriff with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, tragically lost his life on April 19, 1979, while on duty in the Watts area of Los Angeles. Deputy Barthel and his partner were assigned to the Sheriff's Special Enforcement Bureau and were patrolling the Nickerson Gardens Housing Project when they encountered a group of suspicious individuals. As they approached, one of the suspects discarded drug paraphernalia into nearby bushes.
While Deputy Barthel's partner went to retrieve the discarded items, a shooter opened fire from across the street with a rifle, striking both deputies in the face and torso. Despite wearing bulletproof vests, the bullets penetrated through the gaps, causing fatal injuries to Deputy Barthel.
Following the incident, an extensive investigation led to the arrest of two suspects, aged 21 and 24. The 24-year-old suspect was later convicted of first-degree murder on November 20, 1980, and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The other suspect was acquitted of all charges. As of December 2022, the convicted murderer remains incarcerated in the California State Prison in Los Angeles County.

He was a Vietnam War veteran and had served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for ten years.
