On June 23, 1980, the body of 24-year-old Karen Jones was discovered behind a steakhouse in Burbank, California. She had been fatally shot in the head with a small-caliber pistol. Earlier that morning, around 2:00 to 2:30 a.m., Officer Guzzetta had encountered Jones on Sunset Boulevard, cautioning her against loitering in the area. Tragically, just hours later, she became one of the victims in a series of murders that would come to be known as the "Sunset Strip Killings."
On the same day, the headless body of 20-year-old Exxie Wilson, a friend and fellow sex worker of Jones, was found near a dumpster in Studio City. Both women had recently moved to Los Angeles from Little Rock, Arkansas, and had turned to prostitution. A coroner determined that Jones and Wilson died within the same one- to two-hour timeframe on June 23, 1980.
The investigation into these murders led authorities to Douglas Clark and Carol Bundy, who became infamously known as the "Sunset Strip Killers." Clark was convicted of six counts of first-degree murder, including the killings of Jones and Wilson, and was sentenced to death. Bundy pleaded guilty to two murders and received consecutive prison terms totaling over 50 years. Their gruesome crime spree left a lasting scar on the Los Angeles community.
