Anthony Alan Giniewicz, a dedicated police officer with the Signal Hill Police Department, tragically succumbed to complications from gunshot wounds sustained during a violent encounter on February 19, 1985. On that fateful day, Giniewicz and his partner, Officer Steve Owens, had just finished their shift and were dining at a local restaurant in Long Beach, California.
As Officer Owens left the restaurant, he was accosted by three armed gang members who robbed him of his badge and service weapon. The assailants took Owens hostage and attempted to force him back into the restaurant. However, Owens managed to break free and called out for help. Giniewicz, responding to his partner's distress, confronted the suspects outside the restaurant. In the ensuing shootout, Giniewicz was severely wounded, resulting in paralysis from the chest down. Despite his injuries, he managed to return fire, but the suspects escaped.
Giniewicz's life was irrevocably altered by the shooting. He endured numerous medical complications and remained in poor health for the rest of his life. His condition deteriorated over the years, and he ultimately passed away on December 7, 2011, at the age of 58, due to complications related to the injuries he sustained in the 1985 incident. Giniewicz had served with the Signal Hill Police Department for three years and had previously worked for the Massachusetts Department of Correction for seven years. He was remembered as a dedicated officer, a loving father, and a cherished member of his community.
The investigation into the shooting led to the identification and arrest of the three gang members involved. They were charged with multiple offenses, including attempted murder and robbery. The legal proceedings were lengthy, and the suspects were eventually convicted. One of the offenders was paroled in 2003, having served a significant portion of their sentence.
