This incident, often referred to as the Oakland massacre, occurred in the early morning hours when David Esco Welch and his girlfriend, Rita Lewis, forcibly entered the home of Barbara Mabrey. Armed with pistols and a semi-automatic rifle, they went on a shooting spree, targeting the occupants who were asleep at the time.
Among the victims were Darnell Mabrey, his siblings Dellane and Sean Mabrey, Dellane's daughter Valencia Morgan, and family friends Katherine Walker and her son Duane.
The motive behind this brutal attack was rooted in a tumultuous relationship between Welch and Dellane Mabrey. Welch, an ex-convict, had a history of violent behavior and had previously been in a relationship with Dellane, which ended on a bitter note. The court found Welch guilty of six counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and one count of concealing a firearm as a felon. The jury also found true the special circumstance of multiple murders, which warranted the death penalty.
