Investigator Donald R. Johnston of the El Monte Police Department in California tragically succumbed to an illness on November 22, 2002, which was a direct consequence of a gunshot wound he sustained 12 years earlier. On January 29, 1990, Johnston responded to a call at a bank near the intersection of Valley Mall and Ramona Boulevard, where a male suspect was attempting to cash a forged check.
