Charles T. Barbagallo, a 42-year-old postal worker, tragically lost his life on May 6, 1993, in Dana Point, California. Barbagallo was a dedicated employee at the Dana Point Post Office and was known for his kind and peaceful nature. On the fateful day, he became a victim of a violent crime spree perpetrated by Mark Richard Hilbun, a former postal worker with a history of mental health issues and a troubling past.
Hilbun's rampage began with the brutal stabbing of his mother, Frances,
and her dog in their home. Following this, he proceeded to the Dana Point Post Office, where he had previously worked before being dismissed for stalking a female co-worker. Wearing a T-shirt with the word "Psycho" emblazoned on it, Hilbun entered the post office and opened fire. His primary target was Kim Springer, the woman he had been stalking, but she managed to avoid harm by hiding. Unfortunately, Barbagallo, who was one of Hilbun's few friends, was not as fortunate. He was shot and killed by Hilbun, who also wounded another postal worker, Peter Gates, during the attack.
The aftermath of the shooting saw a massive manhunt for Hilbun, who continued his violent spree by wounding several other individuals before being apprehended. He was eventually captured at a bar in Huntington Beach, where he was recognized by a patron who alerted the authorities.
