Ray Anthony Magee Jr., a 24-year-old man from Duarte, California, was tragically killed on May 23, 2020, in Pasadena. Magee was sitting in a car with another man in the 1500 block of North Lake Avenue when a late-model sedan pulled up behind them. Someone inside the sedan fired multiple shots into their vehicle. Magee and his companion were both critically injured and rushed to the hospital.
Unfortunately, Magee succumbed to his injuries three days later, while the other victim survived.
The Pasadena Police Department's preliminary investigation suggested that the shooting was not random and might have been gang-related. Surveillance footage revealed that the vehicle involved in the shooting was a silver 2017 Dodge Charger with tinted windows, last seen driving south on North Lake Avenue. The police believed the incident could be connected to a feud between a local Pasadena gang and a gang from Duarte.
In the months following the shooting, significant progress was made in the investigation. On December 29, 2020, Terrel Leonard Neal Jr., a 26-year-old man from Pasadena, was arrested and charged in connection with Magee's death. Neal was held on more than $2 million bail. Further developments occurred on April 8, 2021, when Dejon Ogletree, a 27-year-old Pasadena resident, was also arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force. Ogletree was found in possession of two guns at the time of his arrest and was subsequently charged with Magee's murder. He was held on $2.4 million bail.
The arrests of Neal and Ogletree marked significant milestones in the case, as both men faced serious charges related to the drive-by shooting. The investigation continued to explore the possibility of gang involvement, with detectives working to uncover more details about the motive behind the attack. The community and law enforcement remained vigilant, seeking justice for Ray Anthony Magee Jr. and ensuring that those responsible for his death were held accountable.
